Patrick Hogan for Mayor

I am delighted to share with you an exciting and transformative plan for revitalizing our beloved downtown area. I have been reaching out to local business leaders, property owners and the MEDC. I am exploring the concept of a BID, Business Improvement District, as well as other viable solutions to incentivize downtown business and property owners to be more involved in a cohesive vision for the Main Street District. A cohesive vision is a priority for success. We want to continue to build upon the momentum and community spirit fostered by business such as Lost Shoe Brewing, Flying Dreams Brewing, Word On The Street Book Store, Dancing Orchids Soapworks, Welly’s Restaurant, Vin Bin, Double T’s, Roc’s Barbershop, Joy-Den Jewelers, Funky Murphy’s and Main St. Café. Just to name a few.

I recently met with the President and Director of the Hudson Downtown Business Improvement District where we explored their successful revitalization of Hudson Main Street, I am convinced that we can replicate and exceed their achievements right here in Marlborough. Key to Hudson’s remarkable transformation was their innovative approach that brings together business and property owners, alongside the historical commission, to collaboratively enhance their downtown area. Our starting point is much different than our neighbor to the north. They had many vacant buildings, Marlborough, on the other hand, does not. But two prime opportunities have emerged that can serve as catalysts for our downtown’s revival. The departure of Santander Bank presents a sizable vacancy at the heart of Main Street, while the underutilized historic Walker building beckons for a revitalization. These opportunities are our foundation for building a downtown that will attract visitors and locals alike, turning it into a vibrant destination.

One of the critical lessons we’ve learned from the Hudson Downtown Business Improvement District, coupled with plain common sense, is that businesses thrive on traffic – both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. To this end, a cornerstone of my revitalization plan is the strategic rerouting of traffic to invigorate Main Street. Traffic signs will be placed at the entrances to Main Street, diverting truck traffic to Granger Boulevard and ushering all other vehicles onto Main Street with a distinctive sign that proudly proclaims “Old Rt 20 Historic Downtown Marlborough.” We will also incorporate the Rail Trail magnifying its many upgrades to steer foot traffic downtown. Way finder signage on the Rail Trail will direct pedestrians and bikers to our downtown.

I am committed to hit the ground running on day one, initiating the process of re-instituting a strong and inclusive Marlborough Downtown Village Association. A community of business owners, residents, employees, and property owners working together for the common good of Marlborough’s Main Street District. Together, with the guidance of the MEDC, we will continue to transform our downtown into a thriving hub of boutiques, shops, restaurants, and bars – a district that fills us all with pride and excitement. The vision for a revitalized downtown Marlborough is not just a dream; it’s a carefully crafted plan backed by successful models and the unwavering spirit of progress. Join me in making this vision a reality and creating a downtown that stands as a beacon of pride for our entire community.
